Thurlby Domain in Speargrass Flat is a family-owned dry hire venue between Queenstown and Arrowtown, built around the ruins of the Hallenstein homestead and a group of restored farm buildings that includes a smithy, a cottage, a red barn, a cow byre and The Stables. It offers two spaces, The Ruins and The Stables, for elopements, full-scale weddings and other celebrations.
The Ruins can host up to 150 guests, with room for a marquee on flat ground. Couples may bring their own alcohol but must arrange a licensed bartender or service staff, and a curfew of 9.30pm applies at The Ruins.
Rain cover is the couple's responsibility, so a marquee or tent is recommended. The grounds have mature trees, walnut shade, stone walls and vintage wagon wheels.
